Gheehi Flats Day Use Area
Day Use AreaDescription
Located between Khancoban and Thredbo, Geehi Flats picnic area is a perfect base for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and 4WD adventures in southern Kosciuszko National Park.
Facilities include picnic tables, barbecue facilities, carpark and toilets. Rubbish bins are not available, so please take rubbish with you when leaving.
Stop for a picnic, lace up your walking shoes, saddle up the horse, or bring your mountain bike and reconnect with nature along the many trails in this area. Discover historic stone huts along Geehi Huts trail, or ride a section of the epic Bicentennial trail. Nearby, Geehi Reservoir and Olsen's lookout offer uninterrupted views of the Western Fall of the Main Range (no winter access).
In summer, the crystal-clear Swampy Plain River is ideal for swimming, tubing or kayaking. Fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout is a popular pastime here. There are also great 4WD trails around Geehi Walls, Major Clews Hut, and Tom Groggin.
All 2WD vehicles need to carry snow chains in winter, between June and October long weekends, on:
Alpine Way between Thredbo and Tom Groggin
Kosciuszko Road (to Perisher)
Guthega Road
Snow chains are recommended for all vehicles driving in the park, including 4WD and AWD, in the event of extreme weather.
Pets and domestic animals (other than certified assistance animals) are not permitted.
