Police Hill Walk
Point of InterestDescription
From the Visitor Centre, walk North along Cradock Road, past Jeff Morgan Gallery and into Wonoka Terrace. Cross over Wonoka Terrace and enter by the small gate in the fence. After passing through the gate follow the track up to the top of the hill. This paddock known as Police Hill was used in the early years for the Police Horses and as the animal pound. The Hawker Rifle Club also used the Hill as their rifle range from 18th April 1913 to early 1980. Previous to this the Rifle Range was further around the hill past the rubbish dump. The rifle range stop mound or 'butt' can be seen part way up the track, at the mound is also the target pit which is covered by steel lids. Do not enter the old pit as there may be snakes in there. Along the track the firing rests were located at 600, 500 and 300 yards points from the target, these are now very hard to see.At the top of the hill viewing: to the North, is Wonoka Bluff, to the North East Wilpena Pound Range, to the East North East, Chace Range, to the South, Hawker, to the West the Yappala Range and Yourambulla Range. It now only opens for special bookings. This a pleasant walk, allow about half an hour.
