First Gold Lease - Eastern goldfields
Point of InterestDescription
The Golden Valley gold mine site is situated on the old Jackson Rd northwest of Bullfinch. The first goldmining lease in the Eastern Goldfields, including this area, was taken out in 1888. The site was commemorated with a plaque in 1929. After it was stolen in 1981, a replacement plaque, donated by Golden Valley Mines, was erected by the Southern Cross Historical Society. The area was located in C.C. Robret's pastoral lease, No 3114/80, but in 1973 it was relinquished by the owner and is now a reserve commemorating a Historical Monument. Nearby is the original tunnel mined out by hand in search of gold. It is 60m long and extends underground for about 20m.
