Girrwarli Art & Cultural Centre
Point of InterestDescription
We sadly advise temporary closure of our Art Centre due to non compliance by Accountant & Yiyili Corporation Secretary, Shelly Johnston, who continues to exercise her control over Yiyili Community and our Artists. The Art Centre currently has no funds available to operate, due to Shelley Johnston's non-compliance of the Funding Contract to provide an Independent Audit Report for the 2022/23 IVAIS Funding Grant, now 6 months overdue. .
Tax payers money is used to support remote Aboriginal Art Centres. Aboriginal Artists rely on their Community Art Centres to support their traditional way of life by painting their stories, maintaining language and cultural values. Art Centres also help broaden social skills by providing opportunities to engage with visitors from all over the world.
You can help our artists to free up their IVAIS funding by asking the government to intervene. Please voice your concerns by emailing the Federal Minister for the Arts, Tony Burke @ tony.burke@mo.arts.gov.au
Aboriginal people can no longer be controlled by those who wish to suppress advancement and opportunity.
Girrwarli Art & Cultural Centre, Studio & Gallery is situated on Gooniyandi County at Yiyili Aboriginal Community, just 5km off the Great Northern Highway .. located approximately halfway between Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing.
The Art Centre was established in 1999. The Gallery displays a unique range of beautiful hand crafted items. Visitors are given an overview of life, culture and heritage of the Gooniyandi people.
Yiyili Community has a well stocked Outback General Store with competitively priced diesel fuel.
When planning your trip to this part of the Kimberley, make sure you also allow time to visit Mimbi Caves, Larrawa Cattle Station and Mary Springs, (especially when the water is running.)
