Description

The northern-most coastal lookouts in the park have great views south along sandstone cliffs and north beyond the town of Kalbarri to the 200 kilometre expanse of the Zuytdorp Cliffs. The short walk trail from the car park to the lookouts is sealed and easy going. Other features visible from here are Red Bluff Beach, Jakes Point, the mouth of the Murchison River and Meanarra Hill. Bluff to Beach Trail Just north of Red Bluff is Wittecarra Creek, believed to be the site of the first permanent landing of Europeans in Australia. In 1629 the Dutch East India trading vessel Batavia was wrecked on the Abrolhos Islands, southwest of Kalbarri. Following the wreck a small group of mutineers massacred 125 of the surviving men, women and children. Whilst most of the ringleaders were executed, two of the conspirators, Wouter Loos and Jan Pelgromm, were landed on the mainland, near the mouth of Wittecarra Creek. Their ultimate fate is unknown. The trail leads down to Red Bluff Beach from Pederick Lookout. Care is needed in steep sections and where the surface is slippery or unstable. Walk down and back up or arrange to meet a vehicle at the beach. Distance: 1.3km return from Pederick Lookout or 2 km return from the car park Time: Allow 30-60 minutes return Difficulty: Class 4. Dogs are not permitted. No camping or overnight parking allowed.
